I don't want a preacher to give me something to think about or a framework in which to behave. I want him to preach Christ in such a way that I meet the risen Lord Jesus. I want to be captivated by him and released by him from my chains.
Who was it that said, "Don't just say what the text says, do what the text does."?
Is it possible that preachers should aim for both? Is it possible that listeners want both too? Could Alistair be throwing the baby out with the bath water?
ReplyDeleteI don't think you can do it without saying it.
ReplyDeleteWhat's the difference between teaching and preaching?
Not sure that I've understood the point.
ReplyDeleteWhats' the difference? One includes exhortation aimed at moving the affections of the heart. But it doesn't necessarily exclude 'something to think about' or even 'a framework in which to behave'.
Are you reacting against the unimaginative, 'all (The only thing) we need to do is teach them...' brand of Word Ministry? If so, then I think we agree!
Yes, I think we agree :-)
